Mental Health Specialties at El Paso Counseling Services, PLLC

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Lorena C. Blank, M.Ed LPC is professionally qualified in a wide spectrum of mental health services and specialties. An idvididual, couple, family, or child may have one or more reasons for seeking counseling. Mrs. Blank can work with you to understand, or in some cases, determine, the underlying cause of your situation. Some of the more common specialties we provide include:

Grief or Loss

It can be tempting to simply "move on" after a major loss. In our culture there is implicit and explicit pressure to seek "closure." Sometimes we say goodbye a little too fast and continue to miss those we have lost. The decision to avoid grieving a loss is really one of delay, and one that can have lasting consequences on our ability to experience joy. Un-grieved losses stay with us in one way or another, until we make the time and effort to honor the feelings and meaning associated with our loss. If you have experienced a loss in your recent or distant past that you suspect continues to impact your physical, emotional, or social state, counseling can be of help. Revisiting the emotions of loss with the support of another in a non-social counseling relationship can enable a healthy grieving process to take place.

Depression

Depression is commonly suffered and widely misunderstood. It can take many forms and be expressed in many different ways for different people. Typically, we tend to think of depression as a general malaise or down feeling. However, clinical depression is usually more severe, characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, decreased energy, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, among others. Major depression also can be signified by a loss of appetite or weight, lack of sleep, decreased energy, and difficulty concentrating. Some people experience these symptoms in different ways, that might include restlessness, anxiousness, and/or anger. A diagnosis of depression depends on the severity of symptoms and the length of time they last, together with considerations of circumstances and associated features.

Treatment of depression utilizes a combination of traditional psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapies. What this means is that through an exploration of a client's history, origins of troubling issues are revealed. Through gaining insight, resulting internal conflicts are eased. Once the sources of harmful behaviors are identified and begin to ease, further work is done to specifically change behavior in the present through directed planning and focused exercises.

Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common afflictions of our modern lifestyle, second only to depression. Anxiety is the mind and body's reaction to stressful, fear-inducing situations and can be both helpful (in some cases) and counterproductive (in most).

Each person is unique, and your anxiety is unique to your personality. If you are facing a lot of anxiety, or perhaps even having "anxiety attacks" or "panic attacks" that are disrupting your ability to perform the normal activities of daily living, then reaching out to an anxiety therapist may make sense.

In addition to these common issues, we also provide mental health services to people that are experiencing or suffering from:

  • Self Esteem & Self Image Issues
  • Stress Management
  • Divorce Recovery
  • Family Challenges Such as:
    • Blended Families
